On February 13, 2024, Safeguard Defers unveiled its pioneering Information and Help Center dedicated to combating deportations and extraditions targeting individuals heading to the People's Republic of China China. This initiative marks a pivotal milestone in our organization's efforts over several years to advocate agnst such actions.
The Center is an extensive resource, unparalleled in scope and detl. It serves as a one-stop solution primarily for legal practitioners who are tasked with defing individuals at risk of being extradited or deported to China. The platform also includes dedicated information pages designed specifically for policymakers and media professionals looking to engage on this critical issue.
Developed in close collaboration with Safeguard Defers' extensive experience in countering deportations and extraditions across various continents including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, this resource has been meticulously crafted based on our direct involvement in successful cases. It compiles information derived from SD's research outputs, expert reports, witness testimonies submitted to courts, interactions with prosecutors at multiple levels - district, appeal, and Supreme Court - as well as insights shared during consultations with lawyers defing clients agnst forced returns to China, and collaborations with academics specializing in China's criminal justice system.
Our efforts have resulted in a 100 success rate in blocking extraditions and deportations when directly involved. The Stop Extradition to China - Information Help Center is now readily accessible via the right-hand side of our website navigation bar, offering content in all six United Nations languages Arabic, Chinese simplified, English, French, Spanish, and Russian. Plans are underway to expand this avlability with additional languages.
Additionally, a forthcoming section will incorporate reports on China's rights situation and our support for Chinese rights defers seeking asylum. This area will complement the existing resources by providing in-depth analyses that enhance the overall understanding of the challenges faced by those targeted.
Beyond this publicly-accessible information, Safeguard Defers has also produced tlored expert reports, supported legal counsel with critical materials, countered China's diplomatic assurances through evidence-based arguments, and, as needed, served as expert witnesses in court proceedings during extradition cases. While these resources are not avlable for public dissemination due to their sensitivity and strategic importance, they remn accessible upon request to legal professionals who can effectively utilize them.
For inquiries about drafting specific expert reports in relevant languages or seeking the organization's expertise as an expert witness, we invite you to reach out through our Assistance Request section.
The launch of this resource center is a transformative initiative that significantly enhances access to information about China and its extradition issues for legal counsel worldwide. Prior to this development, obtning detled, high-quality resources was often limited to those who could afford extensive legal representation or direct assistance from Safeguard Defers.
This new center ensures a more equitable distribution of legal support by providing accessible, comprehensive materials in multiple languages - a game-changer for lawyers and their clients facing extradition risks. The goal is clear: to ensure that when international legal commitments are breached through extraditions to China, those norms and institutions remn robust and unwavering.
For China to benefit from the advantages of extradition cooperation with other countries, it must improve its adherence to legally binding minimum standards for rights protection, not for others to lower their own standards. The launch of this center is a step towards realizing that vision.
The initial version of the Center has been launched and will be continuously updated, with new sections planned for future enhancements. Major updates will be communicated as required.
