Leading Legal Minds Converge in Shangh for SIMC Specialist Mediators' Workshop

In a significant milestone, the Singapore International Mediation Centre SIMC organized its inaugural China Specialist Mediators' Workshop SMW of 2024 at the Shangh International Arbitration Center SHIAC's elegantly appointed office overlooking the captivating Pudong region from May 18 to May 19, 2024.

The event was a collaborative effort between SIMC and SHIAC, ming to promote knowledge sharing about international commercial mediation techniques. The comprehensive trning program featured top industry experts delivering insights on theory and practical application of various dispute resolution methods. Following an initial selection process, the workshop was atted by 24 distinguished legal professionals from renowned law firms and corporate legal departments.

The opening ceremony kicked off with heartfelt addresses from Mr. Chuan Wee Meng, CEO of SIMC, and Ms. Wang Weijun, Secretary General of SHIAC at SHIAC's modern office space.

Ms. Wang highlighted that the collaboration between SHIAC and SIMC is pivotal for Sino-Singapore legal cooperation, driven by the recent agreement signed between both entities and the emergence of international commercial mediation as a new field in China-Singapore legal partnership. With Singapore being a global hub for arbitration under the Singapore Convention on Mediation, the trning event serves as an essential step towards nurturing future dispute resolution experts.

Mr. Chuan, expressing his insights about commercial mediation, stressed that this flexible method not only efficiently resolves disputes but also preserves cooperation among parties involved. SIMC's observations reinforce its efficacy in addressing both minor and complex commercial issues, and Mr. Chuan expressed the hope that participants would acquire a comprehensive understanding of cross-border commercial mediation through the workshop.

The program was facilitated by Mr. Chuan Wee Meng alongside Ms. Eunice Chua, CEO of the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre. The course content included in-depth lectures on mediation theory and hands-on practice sessions where participants engaged in role-playing exercises with varying degrees of complexity to refine their mediation skills.

On May 19, after two days of intensive learning, participants successfully completed the trning and were awarded certificates as SIMC China Specialist Mediators for a period of two years. SIMC exts sincere congratulations to this batch of new specialist mediators from China and anticipates future collaboration in dispute resolution efforts with them.
